Over the weekend I went to a beautiful home in Hillsdale, New York,  for a pot luck dinner.

The company was amazing, the Western views of Columbia County were exquisite and the {pot luck} items were all divine.

The dish I prepared was a very simple roasted carrot dish with roasted pistachios and maple syrup.

Feeds 4-6 people as a side dish-

2 pounds of multi colored organic carrots. {if you cannot get multi colored, orange carrots are just fine}

Rinse the carrots under cold water and cut off the tops and bottoms of the carrots.

Coat carrots with XVOO.

Place in a roasting pan and season with sea salt and cracked black pepper.

Place in your pre-heated 375 degree oven and roast for 1 hour and 10 minutes or until the carrots are tender.

Pour 3 ouncesof XVOO into a sauté pan, and get the oil hot.

Add 2 cups of chopped pistachios and sauté until they get slightly toasted.

Add ¼ tsp of cayenne pepper and ¼ tsp. of crushed red chiles.

Add ½ cup of {real} maple syrup and coat your nuts ^~^

Pour over carrots and serve.

The Carrots can be served room temperature or hot. {please note, the photo above of the carrots had not been garnished with the pistachios and maple syrup yet}

We had so much fun.

The spicy pork was my favorite and almost every small side dish (banchan) that accompanied the meat was amazing. We loved the Kimchi made of pickled Daikon and also the classic cabbage Kimchi. They sent us a steamed egg in a chicken broth that was divine.

You will leave the restaurant smelling a little like BBQ, but it is well worth it.

Eight years ago I went to Argentina for the first time. I was lucky enough to head to San Rafael, Argentina and see a project that was in the works. It was an old vineyard , called Algodon (http://www.algodonwineestates.com/) that had been producing amazing wines with views of the Andes mountains and vines as old as 1946. By the way, the Andes are 100 miles away and can be seen with the naked eye from the vineyard. The place was magical.
I was given the opportunity to invest in the project and paid it no mind.
When I returned to NYC, I told my wife about the project; a 2000 acre vineyard that would produce some of the best Malbec’s, Olive oils and at some point, they would start to build homes right on the vineyard.
It took Carolyn Zweben about 12 seconds to make the decision for us to invest.
Over the last 8 years, we have produced 5 vintages of our Zweben Family Malbec Riserva and this year, after 14 months of aging, it is the best.
We fill one barrel, whenever we have the opportunity and the barrel yields 288 bottles.
It really yields 290 bottles, but the US Department of Agriculture always takes 2 bottles for testing, when it arrives to the states….HMMMMM.
We are also big supporters of an organization in NYC called http://www.dayoneny.org/, and have decided to sell 6 bottle cases, with all proceeds going to Day One.

The Manhattan rental market has been rising for more than a year. Inventory fell and fewer landlord concessions were being offered. Rents for smaller apartments increased the most, as higher employment brought more demand into the city. Would-be first-time buyers continued to be challenged by tight mortgage lending. We anticipate similar conditions throughout the spring.

For the past two months Brooklyn rents remained stable, after rising for much of the past two years. Rental prices were high, while negotiability and landlord concessions remained low. With an improving local economy and tight credit, we don’t anticipate much relief for tenants through the spring market.

Rental prices in northwest Queens were generally higher, although most of the increases occurred in smaller apartments. Marketing time fell and there was less negotiability between landlords and tenants. With rising rents in other boroughs bringing more demand into Queens and an improving city economy, we expect the rental market to remain active in the coming months.
